GTAN and WTAN August Forums - Resources available now
Facilitated by the NSW Public Sector ITAB, the Government and Water Trainers and Assessors Networks (GTAN and WTAN) meet regularly to share and discuss issues impacting skilling and training within government, public safety and water industries across metropolitan, regional and rural NSW.
The ITAB would like to thank all presenters who contributed to our most recent GTAN & WTAN forums on 21 November 2023 and to the network members who attended. I would particularly like to thank the presenters, Tim Burt (Future Skills Organisation), Steve Marsh (Australian Institute for Security and Investigation Training (AISIT), Jarah Penfold & Ashlea Jacobs (Albury City Council), Brendan Guiney, (NSW Water Directorate), Jennifer James (Local Government NSW) and Melissa Wortman (Department of Planning and Environment) for their contributions and continuing support of the Public Sector ITAB.
The forum attendees appreciated the opportunity to hear the insights of these expert presenters and other contributions from network members in the area of Industry skills and training for their sectors. The recordings and presentation slides are now available.

New VET facility to support school students in Western Sydney
Western Sydney high school students can now gain specialist skills to prepare them for fulfilling careers through a pilot program which will see TAFE NSW teachers deliver sought-after courses from a purpose-built facility at a public high school.
Courses being delivered at the centre are for students in year 11 and 12, and all count towards the HSC as well as related qualifications. Read the full article here.
Public Sector Consultation on ANZSCO occupations
The Australian Bureau of Statistics has started the latest round of consultations as part of its review of the Australian and New Zealand Standard Classification of Occupations (ANZSCO).
The review looks at how occupations have evolved, changed, or been replaced over time, how skills requirements have shifted, and emerging fields or unique jobs are changing the workforce profile.
For the complete list of occupationsvisit the ABS Consultation Hub.
Targeting skills of existing and new workers
The Smart and Skilled Targeted Priorities Prevocational and Part Qualification (TPPPQ) Program connects businesses and training providers to ensure you can keep the skills of existing and new workers up to date.
The TPPPQ program is fully subsidised under Smart and Skilled and can only be provided by a quality training provider that has a contract to deliver Smart and Skilled funded courses. For more information on the TPPPQ download the Tailor-made training for your business brochure.
Ongoing commitment to Fee-free training for water operations staff
The NSW Government has announced their support for the water industry by committing 900 fee-free vocational placements to tackle the shortage of skilled water operators in NSW.
Training Services NSW has already invested in training for 683 learners at a cost of over $4.7 million to support the $32.8 million Town Water Risk Reduction Program run by the Department of Planning and Environment.

Marine Rescue NSW volunteers undergo flood rescue training
Marine Rescue NSW is focused on enhancing its on-water flood rescue capability in support of the NSW State Emergency Service when additional resources are requested during a weather emergency.
As a result, more than 40 Marine Rescue NSW volunteers and staff took part in the Service’s first flood rescue and operation induction training at Brunswick Heads and Mullumbimby. Read the full article here.
Water industry occupations recognised under ANZSCO
Water Services Association of Australia (WSAA) joint submission with WIOA and the NSW & Qld Water Directorates to the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) has resulted in the addition of specialisations of Dam or Reservoir Operator and Water and Wastewater Networks Operator to the Australian and New Zealand Standard Classification of Occupations (ANZSCO).
